Overview and History

Anti-Microglia antibodies are a class of autoantibodies that recognize proteins expressed by microglia or microglia-associated structures. Biochemically they are immunoglobulins detected in blood using sensitive immunoassays; interest in these markers has grown as researchers study how peripheral immune signals reflect or influence brain immune activity. Microglia perform surveillance, clear cellular debris, and help regulate inflammation and synaptic health. Antibodies that target microglial proteins can alter signaling or clearance functions, so detection of these antibodies is used as a research and clinical marker to map patterns of neuroimmune engagement alongside other laboratory and clinical data.

Interpreting Highs and Lows

Elevated Anti-Microglia levels may indicate increased immune recognition of microglial proteins and are often associated with patterns of neuroinflammation, altered microglial signaling, or processes linked to blood–brain barrier disruption or prior immune activation.
