Overview and History
Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a highly basic, abundant protein found in the myelin sheath of the central nervous system. Biochemically, MBP helps bind lipid layers together to compact myelin and support rapid nerve conduction; it exists in several isoforms and can be modified after translation, which affects its function and immune visibility.
Antibodies that recognize MBP have been described in research and clinical contexts as markers of immune reactivity to myelin. Laboratory assays detect immunoglobulins directed at MBP to help characterize whether immune targeting of myelin-associated proteins is present alongside other neuroimmune signals.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated anti-MBP levels may indicate measurable immune reactivity against myelin proteins and can be seen in contexts where myelin integrity or neuroimmune signaling is involved. Such elevation is an association and should be interpreted alongside symptoms, imaging, and other Neural Zoomer markers to build a fuller picture.
Low or undetectable anti-MBP levels are common and suggest little or no circulating antibody activity against MBP at the time of testing. Low results do not rule out other immune targets, episodic immune activity, or non-antibody mechanisms affecting nerve function, so interpretation within the full panel and clinical context is important.
