Overview and History

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) is a glycoprotein expressed on the outermost layer of CNS myelin and the surface of oligodendrocyte processes. Biochemically it is a membrane-associated protein implicated in myelin stability and cell–cell interactions; because of its surface exposure, it can be targeted by circulating antibodies. Autoantibodies against MOG (typically IgG class) were identified in clinical research as markers of immune activity directed at myelin beginning in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Detection of anti-MOG antibodies became relevant for understanding patterns of antibody-mediated myelin involvement and is now used as a biomarker to help map neuroimmune signaling in patients with demyelination-like presentations.
