Overview and History
Anti‑Neurofascin antibodies are immunoglobulins directed against neurofascin isoforms (commonly NF155 and NF186). Neurofascins are cell‑adhesion molecules concentrated at the nodes of Ranvier and paranodal regions that help cluster ion channels and stabilize axon–myelin interfaces.
These antibodies were first described in research exploring immune effects on nodal and paranodal architecture. Scientific interest focuses on how immune recognition of neurofascin can alter nodal stability and the organization of proteins required for rapid saltatory conduction along axons.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated anti‑neurofascin levels may reflect measurable immune targeting of nodal or paranodal proteins and are associated with patterns of altered myelin support, disrupted ion channel organization, or peripheral nerve involvement. Such a pattern can help explain symptoms related to changes in nerve signaling but must be correlated with clinical findings and other labs.
Low or undetectable levels suggest there is no measurable antibody activity against neurofascin at the time of testing. Absence of detectable antibodies does not exclude other immune mechanisms, timing effects, or technical limits; interpretation is most reliable when integrated with the full Neural Zoomer panel and clinical context.
