Overview and History
Anti-NMDA receptor is an autoantibody that targets NMDA-type glutamate receptors, a class of ionotropic receptors important for synaptic transmission and plasticity. These antibodies were first recognized in clinical research exploring immune-related changes in brain function and behavior and are measured as immunoglobulin responses against receptor components.
Biologically, NMDA receptors regulate calcium-permeable excitatory signaling critical for learning, memory, and network stability. Antibody binding can modify receptor availability and signaling dynamics, so measuring anti-NMDA receptor activity helps characterize immune interactions with core neurotransmitter systems.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated anti-NMDA receptor levels may indicate active immune targeting of NMDA receptors and are often interpreted as a marker of receptor-directed neuroimmune signaling; such activity can be associated with changes in memory, attention, mood, movement patterns, or seizure-like features. Low or undetectable levels generally indicate no measurable circulating antibody against NMDA receptors in the tested sample, though absence in blood does not completely exclude localized central nervous system activity or other immune contributors. Results should be interpreted alongside the full Neural Zoomer panel and the clinical picture to understand broader neuroimmune patterns and timing.
