Overview and History
ASCA are specific IgA and IgG antibodies directed against cell wall components—particularly mannan—of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Biochemically they represent adaptive immune responses generated when the immune system recognizes yeast-related antigens.
ASCA were identified clinically in the late 1980s as a measurable antibody response linked to intestinal immune reactivity. Their core biological significance is as a marker of antigen-specific humoral activity at mucosal surfaces; elevated ASCA can reflect heightened antibody production against yeast antigens and altered interactions between the gut environment and the immune system.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated ASCA levels may indicate increased antibody activity against yeast-related antigens, which can reflect mucosal immune activation, changes in gut barrier function, or altered microbial exposure. Such elevations are a signal of immune reactivity rather than a standalone proof of any single condition.
Low or undetectable ASCA levels suggest little or no measurable antibody response to Saccharomyces cerevisiae antigens at the time of testing. Absence of ASCA does not rule out other forms of immune activity; results are most meaningful when interpreted alongside other Immune Zoomer markers and clinical context.
