Overview and History
Deaminated gliadin peptide (DGP) IgA is an IgA-class antibody that recognizes gliadin peptides after chemical modification (deamidation) by tissue transglutaminase. Assays for DGP were introduced to improve detection of immune responses against these modified gluten fragments compared with tests using native gliadin, offering a more specific measure of adaptive humoral reactivity to wheat-derived peptides.
IgA is the predominant antibody class at mucosal surfaces, including the gut. DGP-specific IgA is produced by B cells in gut-associated lymphoid tissue and reflects mucosal immune activation to gluten-related peptides, providing a targeted view of intestinal immune signaling rather than general systemic antibodies.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated DGP IgA suggests measurable immune reactivity to deamidated gliadin peptides and often aligns with other signs of gut-directed immune activity or altered nutrient handling. Low or undetectable DGP IgA means there is no measurable IgA response at the time of testing; this can result from low recent gluten exposure (for example a gluten-restricted diet), timing of the immune response, or selective IgA deficiency. Results should be interpreted alongside other Immune Zoomer markers, clinical history, and laboratory context to identify broader immune patterns.
