Overview and History
Deaminated gliadin peptide (DGP) IgG is an antibody of the IgG class that binds to gliadin peptides which have undergone deamidation, a chemical change that can increase their visibility to the immune system. Biochemically, deamidation is catalyzed by enzymes in the gut and alters peptide charge and structure, which can modify how immune receptors interact with those fragments.
Clinically, assays for DGP IgG were developed to detect immune responses to these modified gluten fragments with improved sensitivity over assays that use native gliadin. In practice, DGP IgG reflects systemic humoral immune activity directed at specific peptide targets and is interpreted alongside other serologic markers and clinical information.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated DGP IgG suggests measurable systemic IgG reactivity to deamidated gliadin peptides and may point to gut-directed immune activation or increased intestinal exposure to those peptides. Low or undetectable DGP IgG indicates lack of a circulating IgG response at the time of testing but does not rule out local intestinal immune activity, responses mediated by other antibody classes (for example IgA), or timing-related variability. Results gain meaning when evaluated with complementary markers (tTG, total IgA, DGP IgA, and gut inflammation indicators) and the full clinical picture.
