About Islet Cell Antigen 1 (ICA1)
Overview and History
ICA1 (often called ICA69) is a 69 kDa protein encoded by the ICA1 gene and localized to secretory vesicles in pancreatic islet cells and select neurons. It was identified as an autoantigen in studies of islet-directed immune responses and has been studied alongside other islet proteins such as GAD65 and IA‑2.
Biologically, ICA1 is linked to vesicle trafficking and secretion processes in endocrine and neuronal cells. Its role in vesicle dynamics makes it a logical immune target when the immune system recognizes components of secretory machinery, and measuring immune responses to ICA1 provides a window into that targeted activity.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated ICA1 antibody reactivity may indicate increased immune recognition of islet-cell components and is often seen as part of a broader pattern of islet-targeted immune activity. Low or undetectable ICA1 reactivity generally means there is no measurable antibody response to this specific protein at the time of testing. Interpretation depends on the full Immune Zoomer panel and clinical context, since other islet antibodies or systemic markers can change the meaning of a single result.
