Overview and History
Nucleosomes consist of ~147 base pairs of DNA wound around an octamer of histone proteins; together they form chromatin, the organized structure that compacts and regulates access to genetic information. Biochemically, they are nucleoprotein complexes central to chromatin remodeling, epigenetic regulation, and DNA repair.
Historically, nucleosome structure and function have been fundamental to molecular biology and epigenetics. Clinically, nucleosomes and chromatin fragments are released during cell turnover, apoptosis, and neutrophil extracellular trap formation, and they can act as targets of immune recognition when clearance mechanisms are overwhelmed or altered.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated immune reactivity to nucleosome/chromatin components may reflect increased release of nuclear material (for example from cell death or NET formation), impaired clearance of nuclear debris, or heightened immune recognition of nuclear structures. Low or absent reactivity generally indicates minimal immune targeting of chromatin at the time of testing. Interpretation should always be made alongside other Immune Zoomer markers and clinical information, since single-marker changes are most informative when seen in broader immune patterns.
