Overview and History
PM/Scl-100 (gene EXOSC10) is a protein component of the multi-protein exosome complex, a cellular machine that processes and degrades various RNA species. In immunology, PM/Scl-100 is classified as an autoantigen because some individuals develop antibodies that recognize this self-protein.
Biochemically, PM/Scl-100 participates in RNA quality control and ribonucleoprotein assembly within the nucleus (and in some contexts the cytoplasm). It was identified as a target of autoantibodies in clinical studies exploring immune reactivity involving muscle and connective tissue structures, which led to its inclusion in multi-marker autoimmune panels.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated antibody levels to PM/Scl-100 indicate measurable immune reactivity against this nuclear protein; such reactivity is one piece of evidence suggesting the immune system is targeting components linked to muscle and connective tissue biology. Low or absent antibody levels mean no detectable immune response to PM/Scl-100 on the test, but do not rule out immune activity against other targets. Interpretation depends on antibody titer, coexisting markers across the full Immune Zoomer panel, and the clinical context provided by a healthcare provider.
