Overview and History
PM/Scl-75 is a 75 kilodalton protein that forms part of a multi-protein RNA-processing complex involved in the assembly and turnover of cellular RNA. It was identified as an autoantigen when antibodies directed at this protein were found in people with overlapping immune activity affecting muscle and skin tissues.
Biologically, PM/Scl-75 contributes to ribonucleoprotein complex stability and RNA degradation, processes that influence gene expression and cellular homeostasis. As a targeted antigen, PM/Scl-75 antibodies serve as a molecular sign that the immune system has developed reactivity against components of this RNA-processing machinery.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated PM/Scl-75 antibody levels indicate immune reactivity directed at this RNA-processing protein and are often seen alongside other autoantibodies, forming patterns linked to involvement of muscle, skin, or connective tissue systems. Low or negative PM/Scl-75 results mean there are no detectable antibodies to this specific protein, but they do not rule out immune activity against other targets.
