Overview and History
RNA Polymerase III (Pol III) is a conserved eukaryotic enzyme complex responsible for transcribing small RNAs such as transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 5S rRNA, and certain noncoding RNAs that support protein synthesis and gene regulation. It is composed of multiple protein subunits that work together in the cell nucleus to maintain normal transcriptional activity.
Autoantibodies targeting Pol III subunits were identified as part of expanded autoimmune serology and are measured by immunoassays in clinical laboratories. Detecting immune responses to Pol III indicates loss of immune tolerance to nuclear transcription components and can help characterize the pattern of systemic immune reactivity in a patient sample.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated antibody levels against RNA Polymerase III suggest increased immune recognition of nuclear transcription machinery and may be associated with particular clinical patterns of immune activity affecting skin, vascular, or organ-related processes in some people. Low or absent antibody levels indicate that this specific nuclear target is not a major focus of the immune response, though other antibodies or pathways may still be active. Interpretation should always use the full Immune Zoomer panel and clinical information, since single-marker results are most informative when viewed in context.
