Biochemically, Sm proteins bind small nuclear RNAs and assemble into a characteristic ring structure; they are highly conserved across human cells and are integral to normal gene expression. Historically, immune responses to Sm proteins were identified in serum studies of systemic immune reactivity and became useful as a laboratory marker of targeted immune responses against nuclear machinery. While the proteins are cellular components, testing focuses on antibodies that bind Sm, which serve as signals of immune recognition of nuclear structures rather than measures of protein function itself.
