What is Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA and Why Does the Immune Zoomer Test for It?

Mucosal IgA autoantibody to tTG
Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA is an IgA-class antibody that targets the tissue transglutaminase enzyme, a protein involved in protein crosslinking and tissue remodeling. Measuring tTG IgA helps reveal whether the mucosal immune system is making antibodies against this enzyme, offering insight into gut-directed immune activity and related symptom patterns.

Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA FAQs

What is Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA and why is it important?
tTG IgA is an antibody produced by the mucosal immune system that recognizes the tissue transglutaminase enzyme. Because tTG is active in the gut and can change how proteins are presented to the immune system, the presence of these IgA antibodies can signal mucosal immune reactivity. Testing tTG IgA helps reveal whether immune activity at the gut lining is part of a broader symptom pattern.
What does it mean if my Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA levels are low?
Low or undetectable tTG IgA usually means there is little or no circulating IgA antibody against tissue transglutaminase, suggesting no strong mucosal IgA response to that target. However, low levels can also result from selective IgA deficiency or other test-related factors, so absence of tTG IgA alone doesn’t rule out other forms of immune activity. Results are best interpreted alongside other Immune Zoomer markers and clinical information.
What does it mean if my Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA levels are high?
Elevated tTG IgA indicates the immune system is making IgA antibodies that bind tissue transglutaminase, a pattern often associated with gut-directed immune activation and intestinal tissue stress. High levels point to a focused mucosal immune response but require correlation with symptoms, other antibody results, and clinical context to understand their significance within an individual’s overall immune profile.
Why is this biomarker included in the Immune Zoomer?
tTG IgA is part of the Gut and Gastric Immunity domain to capture mucosal autoantibody signals that may link digestive symptoms to immune activity. Measured alongside over 60 autoantibodies, it helps providers detect organ-specific patterns, prioritize follow-up testing, and build more precise, individualized care plans based on where immune stress is emerging.
